Scottish symbols of love.
The Luckenbooth is one of the most romantic traditions from Scotland’s rich history.
These heart shaped brooches are Scottish symbols of love dating back to the 16th century. It is said that it was designed for Mary Queen of Scots as a betrothal present to the Dauphin of France upon their marriage in 1558; hence the design of two hearts intertwined, surmounted by the royal crown.
An alternate Luckenbooth design is of a single heart decorated with the Royal Thistle of Scotland and surmounted by a royal crown. By tradition the Luckenbooth brooch is given to the bride by the groom on their wedding day, and thereafter pinned to the shawl of their first baby to protect it from evil spirits.
The name comes from lukenbooths or locked booths which were small shops in the Royal Mile in Edinburgh that could be securely locked at night.
